Party with Patrick TONITE Tuesday October 20

Hi everyone,
Well, it was a small but fun group at the fall retreat this year up at Taste of Alaska Lodge, but we had a really good time. As one friend stated - good friends, good food, good view and a good amount of work done, too. That's if you call quilting work! For me it was fun!

Anyway, back at the Cow, we are having Party with Patrick tonight. It's a very nice fall wallhanging. Jackie has a sample up on the door, and it is beautiful! Try and make it if you can. We'll be having pumpkin bars and corn chowder. Jackie said she'd try to make the corn chowder vegetarian, since the recipe is pretty close to that anyway, and we can all enjoy it! Save your appetite!

Our next scheduled class is November 7th with Judy Thompson of North Pole (or Fairbanks). She is teaching a quilt as you go quilt (you have 2 choices of patterns) that looks like a really fun method - fun and done, as the pattern states. The method is a little like a rag quilt, so your layers are all done at the same time, and it would be a great way to do a quick baby or kid's quilt.

We've gotten lots of new things in, including more Kaffe Fassett fabric, several new Moda selections that include charm packs and/or layer cakes & jelly rolls, lots of new patterns and books, project totes, gift items, lots of grommets for the grids and grommets bag, etc, etc...

If you haven't gotten all your Great Alaska Shop Hop kits yet, time is running short. It ends October 31st this year, so hurry and get those orders in. It is beautiful and I am having a great time making my blocks. (Except when it's 11:00 pm and I cut something wrong - TWICE! But I got a good sleep and everything was fine in the morning - a lesson relearned)

I think that hits the basics for now, I mostly wanted to remind you about tomorrow night. I hope you all get this, I am getting tired of email problems :S

See you soon,

Maribeth and Jackie

Pops, Rolls, Cakes and Pack - It ON

Hi everyone!

I sure hope this email works better than last time. I have a new theory on how to send it out., so we'll see....
We've gotten lots of new things in the shop, with lots more to come. We got a new Accuquilt GO! cutter in, that we'll be able to play with and make kits, etc, and if you're interested in purchasing one through the shop, we can order one for you. Looks like lots of fun, and a quick and easy way to cut out your quilt!

We got in more Bali Pops, Jelly Rolls, Layer Cakes and Charm Packs; new patterns and books; odds and ends of new fabrics (batiks, butterflies, music, and others) There are a lot of new notions and goodies coming, too!

Oh, and if you haven't seen them, Willowbend Creations has come up with some awesome precuts! The main fabric is laser cut for you, so if you don't like to cut out those intricate patterns, or you have some reason that it's difficult for you, here's your ticket! These were made for their retail sales, but we were able to get some to sell to our retail customers. Four different patterns available in different fabrics, all you have to do is choose your background and borders to compliment the precut main fabric, and iron it on!

Classes:
Party with Patrick is October 20th. If you didn't get the last email, Patrick didn't come to Alaska, so we'll have to be content partying without Patrick. I emailed him asking him for a life sized cardboard cutout, or wall poster, and he didn't respond, so maybe he doesn't share our sense of humor (?)

November 7 is a fun new class taught by Judy Thomson. It's a quilt as you go class, so when you're done, you're done!! You have to see it to understand it, I guess, so come in and check out the sample. We'll have the patterns in soon, and it is beginner-friendly.

I think that's all the classes we have scheduled for now, October is pretty busy with the FMKQ guild craft day (Amish wallhangings and hand quilting by Lonnie) and the guild retreat in the middle of the month.

So come in and enjoy our fun fabrics, etc. Remember we are open until 9:00 on Friday nights, and you're welcome to come and join us for sewing Friday nights, too, for just $5.
As always, if you'd like to be removed from the list, just send us an email and let us know.

Thanks, and happy quilting!
Maribeth and Jackie

P.S. Did you know we just had our 6th anniversary? Wow! Time flies when you're having fun!

August Quilting

August quilters came to participate in Friday night open sewing at the shop along with Saturday's FMKQ Craft Day.
Kim Wicklund ponders her quilt completion, gorgeous don't you think? Kit shows off a square that she learned from Joyce during craft day. Ann Toth works on a wonderful t-shirt quilt for her son. Konnie completes her table runner top via class and Arlene is steady working away.

Tom Durham Brings Class to Calico Cow

Hello, this is Ruby-a quilter and Delta resident who loves going to the Calico Cow classes. Well, here's a picture of 3 generations with Papa Durham in tow. He originates from Kentucky but they moved to CA to acquire better teaching opportunities. Tom is a 47-year career retired teacher/administrator from California. He's also dad to 1 daughter and 2 sons, Dave (who was our wonderful banker for years) and Jeff (Soil and Water main "go-to guy" and community leader). Tom also has a wife, Lois, whom we didn't get to meet but heard all about as he explained "what to do with my hands" once I tried to quit smoking.

The solution, was to crochet and sew. Remember, men are great tailors too! I also recall hearing that many a football players picked up needlepoint to do on the road and increase finger dexterity. My father hooked rugs when he quit smoking and I have one in my spare bathroom downstairs. So, Tom quilted. Some of his inspiration comes from his mother's quilts whom she got from her great grandmother. He was generous enough to do a "trunk show" and it was FABULOUS! A rare treat and I am so happy that I was able to see and treasure the time and inspiration.

3 generations of Durhams and I thank them all for their efforts, the slides, quilts, talk and humor that was a family love of an artwork hopefully never forgotten. Way to go Calico Cow! What fun we had and a memorable time of sharing.

Party with Patrick??

Hey everyone,

Are you ready to Party with Patrick?? Actually, party without Patrick for now, but he says he's coming in August or September. If you don't know, he's a famous fabric and pattern designer. Have you ever seen the applique' with big round baby faces? That Patrick. So, once a month, we'll be partying! Patrick provides the theme, the pattern for the project, the recipes, etc.

This month will be on May19th - that's THIS Tuesday, so get ready, and let us know if you can make it. It's only $10, for all that! This month is get ready for those June weddings - a table mat that can be used under the cake, or on the gift table.

Actually you could make it in any color, or since it has hearts, you could be ahead of the game for Valentines day!

Here's what you need:
First of all, make and wear the craziest bridal veil you can think of (we probably wouldn't kick you out if you don't have one, though). We pick the best one, and turn it in to Patrick, and that person gets entered to win a prize from Patrick.

Check out www.patricklose.net if you want to see what Patrick is all about!
Background: 21 X 21" square
Fat quarters or scraps of pinks for hearts and leaves, light pink and dark pink
Backing and batting: 22 X 22" square of each
Fusible web
Thread for quilting and satin stitching

We don't have a sample made, but you can see a picture of it on Monday or Tuesday.
We won't be actually teaching the class, just facilitating, or if you want, just get the pattern and do it later.

Since this is our first one, we'll be flexible to see how it goes!I'll send another email later about the Tom Durham classes on the weekend of the 30th.Hope to see you on Tuesday!!

Call the shop if you have any questions.
Maribeth

NEW NEW NEW Stuff

Only in Delta at the Calico Cow----Willow Bend Bison Creation Pattern

Hy everyone!

Do we ever have some cool new stuff!
Is anyone out there an Amy Butler fan? She's a really popular designer, especially among the younger crowd. We got in several of her ready-made bags, as well as 2 of the 4 bolts of fabric we ordered. We also have some of her patterns, so you can make your own bags, or a gum drop pillow.

We also got in some new Robert Kaufman batiks, and a bag pattern and clothesline for the soon-to-come Hoffman Bali Pops (pre cut 2 1/2" strips of Hoffman batiks).

Coming up May 29th and 30th, we plan to have a special guest. The father of Delta's own Jeff Durham, (whom many of you may know,) Tom Durham! He'll be doing a trunk show, I believe, on Friday night the 29th, and teach some kind of class on Saturday the 30th. Jackie says he is an out-of-the-box type of quilter, so we're not quite sure what he'll come up with! Stay tuned for more details, or call the shop.

On June 20th, Eddy will be teaching the Professional Tote, again! This is a very popular bag class. It works for anything from a diaper bag to a laptop bag. I love mine for traveling - it has a strap on it that fits over your handle on your roller suitcase. Some of you have been waiting for this class, so don't miss it!

In July, Jackie is planning to have the much-requested Kid's camp! We don't have the dates nailed down for sure yet, possibly July 6-10, but it will be a Monday thru Friday, day-camp style, in the mornings.

OK, now for the biggy, as if this isn't enough! Another designer! We are starting a new program called "Party with Patrick". Patrick Lose, a fabric and pattern designer has started a new program for once a month parties. We'll hold ours on a weekday evening. He has the cutest easy applique' patterns you'll ever see. We already missed the first month, so we must get going. I'm thinking of the 3rd Tuesday of each month, but I'd like some feedback from possible participants. It's our option of how to run it, and we haven't decided that for sure, but I wanted to give you a heads up, and have you put your thinking caps on. The May project is a bridal theme for those June weddings we must all get ready for. Each month's theme has a recipe, a small quilt pattern, and something especially fun. (This month we are all supposed to come with a CRAZY hand-made bridal veil - Patrick says by crazy, he means disturbing). We get to choose the winner, and our winner gets voted on by Patrick, with the winner getting some really awesome prizes! Patrick Lose, himself, is planning a trip to Alaska sometime in August or September and will be visiting our shop! We are thrilled for this opportunity!

Oh, our Great Alaska Shop Hop has begun! Actually our block kits aren't quite ready yet, we are still awaiting the final finished, corrected background square instructions, but we are taking orders, if you're willing to wait a week or so. I hope to get the picture of the block and quilt on the website today.

So, now you're pretty much up to date on all our happenings. We are so excited! See you soon!

April (Ignore the snow) at the Calico Cow

Hi from the Calico Cow!!!

I'd say we're definitely in the "break-up" season. Nice enough to get out of the house, but not nice enough to get in the garden - just right for quilting!

We met with our fabric rep last week, and are so excited to get all the new fabric we ordered! We jumped in with both feet with some Kaffe Fassett and Amy Butler - how fun! And we have new minky on its way, lots of new batiks, and oh, I can't even remember it all!
We already have the new Robert Kaufman "Last Frontier" fabric in, which is great, since last year's has been gone a while. We also have some new Moda jelly rolls and charms packs with companion fabrics - pretty pastels, modern medium-tones, and some woodsy flannels. Some of them have already flown out the door!

Wednesday night, April 29th is a REALLY cool class, especially if you've heard of or seen the Alaska State 50th Aniiversary Quilt. Those from Delta may have seen it last month at the Delta Community Library. Well, Delta's block was designed by Mary Stenros of Willowbend Designs in Soldotna. Mary is going to come and teach us that very block, or any of her other designs. The class will run from 5:00 pm til 9 or 10. This is a unique opportunity! She has so many great tips so share! There are so many of her patterns to choose from, and we have most of them, except for the new ones. Check out her website and decide which one you want to do. Then buy your fabric (so you can prewash it ahead of time) and your fusible web, and you can get your pattern when you get here for the class. We will be restocking our supply while she's here, too. Don't miss it!

We are working on dates for Eddy to teach the Professional Tote again, I think Marcia is going to do Quillows, and Jackie is planning a kid's camp for sometime this summer!

Don't forget Friday night sewing for $5, or just come and shop. It's so much fun, like a quilting party, every week!!

I'm sure I'm forgetting something, so make sure you stop in at the shop, to check out the new fabric, and see what else is new!

Happy Spring!!
