November News

While dreaming of new quilting projects to work on during the long days and nights of winter, come on in to the Calico Cow and see the wonderful fabrics that we have gotten in for use in fabulous objects that show the flavor of the season. We have superb fabrics to make table toppers, bed runners and quilts that reflect the holiday season. There are beautiful greens, yellows, golds, browns plus pumpkin and leaf prints that are favorites for Thanksgiving. Then looking further into the store, you will find stunning reds, greens, golds, blues, silvers, and blacks as well as delightful seasonal prints for Christmas.

In the past several weeks a number of lovely fabrics have come in. Several new flannels in lovely pastels for the quilt you may have been thinking about for that new child or grandchild that’s become a twinkle in everyone’s eye. You don’t necessarily need to use flannel as jelly rolls and coordinating fabric have come in to make a darling baby quilt as well.

On the right is the delightful baby quilt that Kit Benson for her
granddaughter made using the new Windsor Hill fabric by Bunny Hill Designs for Moda.

Some of the projects that quilters who frequent the Calico Cow have been working on are
show-cased below.
On the left, Calico Cow employee, Lynn, made
this charming Christmas-themed quilt. She will be using this as part of
her holiday decorating.

Our customer, Jessica, made a bear-paw table runner  in a
class held earlier this year. Jessica just started quilting this past year.
Naomi is also new to quilting. She has made a couple baby quilts
now. This is her second one. Like any seasoned quilting veteran, she
is happily developing more quilting projects.

For those of you looking for classes. There are a number of different ones coming up. The
variety is exciting. Very challenging classes for the more experienced quilter and then beginning
classes for those just starting their quilting adventures. So, please mark your calendar for the
different classes you may be interested in.

Saturday, November 10, 2012, the Forget-Me-Knot Quilting Guild will
be meeting at 9:00 in the class room at the Calico Cow. After a
business meeting, Guild Member, Christy Rogers will be leading the
group in making snowball placemats. For a list of what you need to
make these cute place mats, call or come in to The Calico Cow. There is no charge for this class.

Saturday, November 17, 2012, Joyce Bendell will be doing another BuggyBarn from the Buggy Barn pattern book, Crazy Snow Days. The cute quilt being made this Saturday will be the mittens pattern. Everything you need to make this quilt is available. The class is $15.00 plus items needed to create your buggy barn masterpiece.

Saturday, November 24, 2012, Calico Cow employee, Lynn Fix, will be leading the class making a spicy spiral table runner using a pattern from School House Quilts. Fabric, pattern and special ruler needed to make this delightful table runner can be purchase at The Calico Cow. The cost of the
class is $15.00.

Don’t forget the shop open house on December 1st. Come in and look at our beautiful quilts that are available for sale in addition to our growing selection of fabric.

November also brings a spectacular sale. From Tuesday, November 20th through Saturday, November 24th, all the fabric in the store will be 30% off.

Look for other fun, exciting and challenging classes in the coming months. There is a chance that we will be expanding our horizons and move into the realm of crochet with a crocheted rag rug. The beginner classes will be continuing and there are other fun quilting classes in the works.

  • Remember that our hours have changed.
  • The store is open from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Tuesday through Saturday.
  • We are now closed on Sundays and Mondays. November 22nd is Thanksgiving, and we will be closed so staff may enjoy the holiday with their families.

Thank you for your patronage,

Fused Morley J Moose III - How to Applique

Shana's Morley

Learned something new by using this method of appliqueing pieces together on the ironing board, on a pressing sheet (the commercial kind). You will overlap each piece onto the other and then press it together like a puzzle. IMPORTANT: When cool, peel entire unit from pressing sheet and place on background fabric. It should now be one complete unit which makes it easy to lay on background fabric. Press design onto the background fabric by using an up and down motion with a medium iron for about 8-10 seconds in any one spot. Thank you, Paula, for your expertise!

How to Applique Starts with the Basics of Tracing, Fusing Fabric and Cutting...

A Memorial Day Weekend Sale!!!

April 14th (this Saturday) is Morley J Moose taught by Ruby for the guild - he's so cute! He's on the blog, too, and there are more samples in other colors at the shop.

Our next class is the Kaleidoscope class with Carol McConahy on April 28th. That looks like a lot of fun, too, as there are so many possiblities! You don't want to miss this one, sign up soon! Although she recommends the Marti Michell book and ruler, you can use any kaleidoscope book and 45 degree ruler you have. She will help you learn the versatility of the kaleidoscope block, and different techniques that work for you. There are some awesome designs ranging from a simple 2 color block to a "stack n whack" style. Come in and see the samples in the classroom, and get your creative juices flowing! Sign up soon - only $15 for the class, 10.00 to 4:00. Check out the blog for pictures!

On May 5th, Joyce Bendell will be teaching us a mystery quilt called :"Mystery at the Ranch" The cost is only $16.50 and includes the pattern! Some people ask what it is, and we have to say "I don't know, it's a mystery!" Joyce will give you one step at a time, so you don't know what it looks like until you're done. It's so much fun. When you sign up and pay, you will get your fabric requirements (the key to choosing fabrics is CONTRAST) and the first step. Yes, that means there's homework before class, but you'll get that much more done in class!

Then on May 26th is Sandi's next installment of her block of the month called America the Beautiful. See the blog for this one, too. No cost for guild members or $5.00 for non-members.

And - big news!!!! A Memorial Day Weekend Sale!!! Thursday May 24th through Monday May 28th we'll have 25% storewide!

(the usual exceptions apply- consignments, fabric already on sale, etc.)

Thursday through Monday should give everyone time to get in and shop, even if you have weekend plans.
